      <p>Son of Dasey Southall and Edith Southall. Resided in
         Henrico County, Va. Married to Martha Vanderwall in 1756.
         Member of the Virginia House of Delegates and the Senate.
         Served on a commission to establish the capital at Richmond
         and was one of three commissioners for the state foundry at
         Westham.</p>

      <head>Scope and Content Information</head>
      <p>Receipts for money paid by Southall in connection with
         establishment and building of the state foundry at Westham on
         James River above Richmond. Included are accounts for Westham
         canal and for a brewery at Westham. Accounts concern building
         materials, the use of hired slave labor and expenses for
         re-capturing runaway slaves. Prominent individuals who are
         represented in the collection include: William Bagnall, John
         Ballendine, Charles Carter, George Carrington, Samuel DuVal,
         Jr., Samuel Ege, William Foushee, Daniel Lawrence Hylton,
         Joseph Mayo, John Pleasants, Matthew Pleasants, Robert
         Pleasants, Thomas Pleasants, John Reveley, James Barrett
         Southall, and Edmund Winston.</p>
