    <head>Content Description</head>
<p>Lizzie Earle Cary Daniel (1848-1915) kept this journal from 1875-1883. She titled it "A Life and its Gleanings." The contents include handwritten poetry, philosophical musings, and newspaper clippings. Many clippings are simply layered between the pages by Daniel. The journal is accompanied by a 1916 "Interrogatory for Listing by Taxpayer and Commissioner of Revenue Tangible and Intangible Personal Property, and Money" form.</p>  </scopecontent>

    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>Lizzie Earle Cary Daniel was born in 1848, and died in 1915 in Richmond. She is buried in Hollywood Cemetery. Her father was Colonel John Baytop Cary, who served in the Confederate army during the Civil War. Daniel was active in Confederate causes and church work throughout her life; publishing another journal she had kept during the Civil War as a child titled "A Confederate Scrap-Book" in 1893. She had a daughter, Cary Daniel, who died in infancy the same year her husband passed away in 1879.</p>  </bioghist>
