The collection is arranged into one series, Series I. Dedication of the Hearth Memorial to the Enslaved.
The Hearth Memorial to the Enslaved was created in response to research into William & Mary's history with slavery by students and faculty. Through assembly resolutions, the Board of Visitors acknowledged the university's involvement in slavery and established The Lemon Project: A Journey of Reconciliation in 2009 to study the relationship between African Americans and William & Mary.
The Hearth was designed by William & Mary alumnus Will Sendor '11 as a result of an international memorial design competition initiated by William & Mary President Emeritus Taylor Reveley in 2018. The design was executed by the architectural firm Baskervill. 400 donors, the Board of Visitors, as well as every former rector, contributed to the completion of the project, which cost over $2.9 million.
