Gerrit Smith (March 6, 1797–December 28, 1874) was a prominent American businessman, philanthropist, and social reformer. He was actively involved in the abolitionist movement and ran for President of the United States in 1848, 1856, and 1860. He also served one term in the House of Representatives from 1853-1854, representing New York.
