    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>John Letcher, a former Virginia Governor during the American Civil War, was selected to be president of the Southern Historical Society's Convention in Montgomery White Sulphur Springs on August 14th, 1873. Jubal A. Early, a former Confederate Major General during the American Civil War who had served under both Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, was elected to be president of the Southern Historical Society. Early held his position as president until his death in 1894. The Southern Historical Society was founded in 1869 with the purpose of preserving any archival materials related to the Confederate States of America.</p>  </bioghist>

<p>Collection contains letter addressed to John Letcher, a former Virginia Governor during the American Civil War, from Jubal A. Early, a former Confederate Major General during the American Civil War. The letter extends an invitation to attend a Southern Historical Society convention as an appointed delegate, a decision made by Jubal A. Early. The convention's purpose was to reorganize the Southern Historical Society after the end of the Civil War.</p>  </scopecontent>
