    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>Brigadier General Andrew Lewis was politically and militarily involved in Colonial America serving as both military officer and member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He served in both Lord Dunmore's War and the Revolutionary War. While fighting in the Revolutionary War, he successfully took charge of Gwynn's Island, thereby defeating Governor Dunmore and ending his raids on the east coast of Virginia.</p>  </bioghist>

    <head>Content Description</head>
<p>Letter written on June 12, 1776 by Brigadier General Andrew Lewis to Major General Charles Lee. Lewis was an Irish born veteran of the French and Indian War and Lord Dunmore's War.He was made brigadier general in March 1776 and stationed in Virginia during the Revolutionary War. Major General Charles Lee, was second in command to George Washington of the Continental Army.The letter was written while General Lewis commanded forces to defend the areas of Norfolk and Hampton from Governor Dunmore, and concerns how Lewis plans to defeat Lord Dunmore at the Battle of Gwynn's Island.</p>  </scopecontent>
