The illustrations were done in part at the Ragdale Foundation, Lake Forest, Illinois, during a residency in March 1992. Funding came from grants by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and a City Arts I grant from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.
