Scope and Content Information

There are two grants, 1770 and 1846, pertaining to land in
Albemarle County, Virginia. There is a land patent, August 27,
1770, by which George the Third of Great Britain, France, and
Ireland did grant and confirm unto Joseph Hawkins a tract or
parcel of land containing three hundred and seventy acres
lying and being in Albemarle County on both sides of Moorman's
River and bounded by lines including those of William Shelton
and William McCord. The patent is signed by Botetourt
[Norborne Berkeley (1718-1770)], governor of the Colony and
Dominion of Virginia. There is also a land grant, June 30,
1846, by which William Smith, governor of Virginia, did grant
unto Garland T. Brown a tract or parcel of land eighteen acres
on the north side of Buck's Elbow and waters of Moorman's
River in Albemarle County.
