These papers were given to the Library by Louis J. Halle, Jr.of Geneva, Switzerland, through Kenneth W. Thompson, of the Miller Center, University of Virginia(who reviewed this collection for personal material) on June 15, 1987.

 Scope and Content

This addition to the papers of Louis J. Halle, Jr., 112 items, 1954-1987, contains his correspondence with the staff of the Rockefeller Foundation, especially Kenneth W. Thompson, but also with Dean Ruskand Gerald Freund.

The earlier correspondence reveals a great deal about the circumstances surrounding several of Louis J. Halle, Jr.'s crucial career changes during the 1950's, especially his transition from the United States State Departmentto the academic world via the University of Virginia, where Halle's position as a full Research Professor was funded on a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. Halle's first three years at the Graduate Institute of International Studieswere also funded through Rockefeller Foundationgrants.

Later correspondence, besides granting further insight into Louis J. Halle, Jr.'s developing friendship with Kenneth Thompson, also contains letters requesting Halle's opinion of proposals sent to the Rockefeller Foundationin application for grants.

The collection also contains part of one of Louis J. Halle, Jr.'s lectures entitled "Ideology & International Relations" (October 21, 1969). General topics mentioned include: the United Statespolicy makers' Formosa decision of 1950 (March 25, 1955); children's books and education (August 16 & 24, 1955); Reinhold Niebuhr (June 10 & 14, 1955); the philosophy of history (August 20 & 24, 1955); the possible danger of x-rays (May 16 & June 24, 1957); the development of a University of VirginiaResearch Institute for Foreign Affairs under Hardy Dillard(October 31, 1957); the idea of an "establishment" and publishing (May 24, 1960); the poor quality of academic publishing (May 24, 1960); Halle's discussion of the fallacious concept of "monolithic" Communism (November 24, 1963); and a discussion of what the role of the Rockefeller Foundationshould be (January 13 & May 20, 1966).

Three of Kenneth Thompson's articles are present in the collection including: "Toynbee's Approach to History Reviewed" (August 20, 1955); "Prophets and Politics" (May 16,1955); and "Mr. Toynbee and World Politics: War and National Security (April 1956).
