      <head>Scope and Content</head>
<p>This addition to the papers of
         <persname>Louis J. Halle, Jr.</persname>, 112 items,
1954-1987, contains his correspondence with the staff of the
         <corpname>Rockefeller Foundation</corpname>, especially
         <persname>Kenneth W. Thompson</persname>, but also with
         <persname>Dean Rusk</persname>and
         <persname>Gerald Freund</persname>.</p>
<p>The earlier correspondence reveals a great deal about the
         circumstances surrounding several of
         <persname>Louis J. Halle, Jr.</persname>'s crucial career
changes during the 1950's, especially his transition from the
         <corpname>United States State Department</corpname>to the
         academic world via the
         <corpname>University of Virginia</corpname>, where Halle's
position as a full Research Professor was funded on a grant
         from the
         <corpname>Rockefeller Foundation</corpname>. Halle's first
         three years at the
         <corpname>Graduate Institute of International
         Studies</corpname>were also funded through
         <corpname>Rockefeller Foundation</corpname>grants.</p>
<p>Later correspondence, besides granting further insight into
         <persname>Louis J. Halle, Jr.</persname>'s developing
         friendship with
         <persname>Kenneth Thompson</persname>, also contains letters
requesting Halle's opinion of proposals sent to the
         <corpname>Rockefeller Foundation</corpname>in application for
         grants.</p>
<p>The collection also contains part of one of
         <persname>Louis J. Halle, Jr.</persname>'s lectures entitled
         "Ideology &amp; International Relations" (October 21, 1969).
         General topics mentioned include: the
         <geogname>United States</geogname>policy makers' Formosa
         decision of 1950 (March 25, 1955); children's books and
         education (August 16 &amp; 24, 1955); Reinhold Niebuhr (June
         10 &amp; 14, 1955); the philosophy of history (August 20 &amp;
         24, 1955); the possible danger of x-rays (May 16 &amp; June
         24, 1957); the development of a
         <corpname>University of Virginia</corpname>Research Institute
         for Foreign Affairs under
         <persname>Hardy Dillard</persname>(October 31, 1957); the idea
of an "establishment" and publishing (May 24, 1960); the poor
quality of academic publishing (May 24, 1960); Halle's
discussion of the fallacious concept of "monolithic" Communism
(November 24, 1963); and a discussion of what the role of the
         <corpname>Rockefeller Foundation</corpname>should be (January
         13 &amp; May 20, 1966).</p>
      <p>Three of
         <persname>Kenneth Thompson</persname>'s articles are present
in the collection including: "Toynbee's Approach to History
Reviewed" (August 20, 1955); "Prophets and Politics" (May
16,1955); and "Mr. Toynbee and World Politics: War and
         National Security (April 1956).</p>
