      <p>This literary collection consists of ca. 210 items,
         1969-1993, pertaining to the writing and teaching career of 
         <persname>John Casey</persname>. There are correspondence,
         manuscripts, a photograph, and printed material.</p>
      <p>The correspondence contains letters from various
         contemporary authors or other letters of interest. On October
         29, 1980, 
         <persname>Janet Lembke</persname>writes about the 
         <corpname>Creative Righters</corpname>at the 
         <geogname>Staunton</geogname>prison, mentioning the interest
         of Casey and 
         <persname>Mary Lee Settle</persname>and 
         <persname>Breece D'J Pancake</persname>(d. 1979) as a former
         guest. On March 10, 1982, 
         <persname>John Barth</persname>inquires about a particular
         phrase re the "sotweed factor." Letters of 1982 include ones
         from 
         <persname>David Huddle</persname>(1942-) and 
         <persname>Tobias Wolff</persname>(1945-) expressing an
         interest in becoming a writer at the 
         <corpname>University of Virginia</corpname>. On October 7,
         1982, 
         <persname>Mary Ryan</persname>writes about the 
         <corpname>Western Division of the Creative Writing
         workshop</corpname>, mentioning future guests 
         <persname>Grace Paley</persname>, 
         <persname>Wallace Earle Stegner</persname>(1909-), and 
         <persname>[E. L.] Doctorow</persname>(1931-). Letters of 1983
         from 
         <persname>Mary Carter</persname>, 
         <persname>Jonathan Penner</persname>(1940-), and 
         <persname>Vance Nye Bourjaily</persname>concern the 
         <corpname>Henry Hoyns Chair of English</corpname>at the 
         <corpname>University of Virginia</corpname>. On August 27,
         1984, 
         <persname>Scott Donaldson</persname>writes concerning his
         biography on 
         <persname>John Cheever</persname>. A letter, n.y. April 18,
         from 
         <persname>Amy Cunningham</persname>, 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">The Washingtonian</title></bibref>, mentions several of Casey's former students,
         including 
         <persname>Claude Williams</persname>(or, 
         <persname>Mike High</persname>), 
         <persname>Lewis Jeffrey Zeldman</persname>, 
         <persname>Edward P. Jones</persname>, and 
         <persname>James Alan McPherson</persname>(1943-). A letter of
         October 30 n.y., from 
         <persname>Frederick Bradlee</persname>concerns his solo
         performance "The Glory of Language." Three undated letters of 
         <persname>Lewis Jeffery Zeldman</persname>discuss his current
         and future novels. A letter, December 11, 1986, from 
         <persname>Amanda Vaill</persname>of 
         <corpname>Viking Penquin Inc.</corpname>, refers to Casey's
         comment on 
         <persname>Rebecca Brown</persname>'s 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">The Haunted House</title></bibref>. On December 28, 1989, 
         <persname>Waller H. Horsley</persname>writes concerning the
         gift to the 
         <corpname>University of Virginia Board of
         Visitors</corpname>members of an autographed copy of Casey's 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Spartina</title></bibref>and his receipt of the 
         <corpname>National Book Award</corpname>. On January 3, 1990 
         <persname>Austin E. Quigley</persname>(1942-) also writes
         about the 
         <corpname>National Book Award</corpname>.</p>
      <p>A letter, November 2, 1992, from 
         <persname>Maureen Howard</persname>(1930-) mentions 
         <persname>Eudora Welty</persname>(1909-) and being invited to
         read at the 
         <corpname>Williams Corner Bookstore</corpname>. On November
         11, 1992, 
         <persname>Hugo Weisgall</persname>, of the 
         <corpname>American Academy of Arts and Letters</corpname>,
         informs Casey of being chosen to receive the prestigious 
         <corpname>Mildred and Harold Strauss Living</corpname>. A
         lengthy and social letter, November 29, 1992, from 
         <persname>Richard [Jones]</persname>, discusses national
         politics, political figures, writers, and other social
         matters. Among the persons mentioned in Jones' letter are: 
         <persname normal="Bill Clinton">William Jefferson
         Clinton</persname>(1946-), 
         <persname>George Bush</persname>(1924-), 
         <persname normal="Edward Kennedy">Edward Moore
         Kennedy</persname>(1932-), 
         <persname>H. Ross Perot</persname>(1930-), 
         <persname>Constance [Casey Varmus]</persname>, 
         <persname normal="Helen Pancake">Helen</persname>and 
         <persname>Breece D'J Pancake</persname>, 
         <persname>[James Alan] McPherson</persname>, 
         <persname>Betty Howland</persname>, 
         <persname>Saul Bellow</persname>(1915-), 
         <persname normal="Bill Shannon">Bill</persname>[William] and 
         <persname>Liz Shannon</persname>, 
         <persname>Bertha Donahue</persname>, and 
         <persname>Mark Scowcroft</persname>. On February 27, 1993,
         "Sandro" [ 
         <persname>Alexander Stille</persname>] writes about his work
         on a book on the Mafia in 
         <geogname>Italy</geogname>[ 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Excellent Cadavers: The Mafia and the Death of the
            First Italian Republic</title></bibref>] and mentions 
         <persname>Tod A. Marder</persname>.</p>
      <p>There is a letter, March 14, 1993, from Casey's uncle, 
         <persname>Charles M. Dudley</persname>, mentioning the movie
         rights to 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Spartina</title></bibref>and family news. There is a lengthy letter, April 2,
         1993, from "Tom" describing life in 
         <geogname>Paris</geogname>, particularly rowing and racing in 
         <geogname>France</geogname>. A letter, April 2, 1993, from the
         <corpname>William Morris Agency, Inc.</corpname>concerns the
         purchase of 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Spartina</title></bibref>. On April 7, 1993, 
         <persname>Jonathan Richardson Smith</persname>praises Casey's 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Testimonty and Demeanor</title></bibref>and 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Spartina</title></bibref>, and discusses the subject matter in his
         dissertation [ 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">The Rise of the Novel Trilogy in the U. S.,
            1890-1940</title></bibref>] and 
         <persname>Pearl Buck</persname>'s 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">House of Earth</title></bibref>trilogy. There is a letter, April 14, 1993, from
         Casey's sister, 
         <persname>Constance [Casey Varmus]</persname>concerning family
         matters. Letters of the spring of 1993 often refer to Casey's
         receipt of the 
         <corpname>Mildred and Harold Strauss Living</corpname>and the 
         <corpname>Sewanee Writers' Conference</corpname>. There are
         letters from authors 
         <persname>Alexander Theroux</persname>(April 14, 1993) and 
         <persname>Rita Mae Brown</persname>(April 20, 1993), and 
         <persname>Susan Brownell</persname>(April 22, 1993).</p>
      <p>A letter, April 17, 1993, from 
         <persname>Jan C. Shapin</persname>, discusses the foundation
         of writing and what a writers conference should be. 
         <persname>Marianna Wiggins</persname>writes on April 24, 1993,
         enclosing her short story, "Can You Smell My Sandwich?" A
         letter, May 27, 1993, from 
         <persname>Alexandra [Kuczynski]</persname>mentions the 
         <corpname>American Academy of Arts and
         Letters</corpname>ceremony, 
         <persname>Dana Groseclose</persname>, 
         <persname>Michael Carlisle</persname>, and 
         <persname>Louis Theroux</persname>. On June 3, 1993, 
         <persname>Jeff Pearson</persname>writes about finishing his
         novel 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">The Luck of Dan Daniel</title></bibref>. Letters of August 1993 mention the Sewanee Writers'
         Conference of that summer. There are two letters, August 5
         &amp; 27, from 
         <persname>Reid Mitchell</persname>concerning his book 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">The Vacant Chair</title></bibref>, his novella 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Things Ruth Taught Me</title></bibref>, and Listowel's Writers Week. There are letters from
         authors 
         <persname>Wyatt Prunty</persname>(August 5, 1993), 
         <persname>Brenda K. Marshall</persname>(August 6, 1993), and 
         <persname>Lawrence C. Melton</persname>(August 6 &amp;
         September 10, 1993), concerning 
         <geogname>Sewanee</geogname>and some of their own writings. A
         letter, August 16, 1993, from 
         <persname>Charles M. Dudley</persname>concerning an honorady
         degree in literature for Casey. Letters of August 1993 from 
         <persname>Constance [Casey Varmus]</persname>reminisce over
         the 
         <famname>Casey family</famname>during a move from one house to
         another. There is an undated letter from Casey's daughter
         "Nell" [ 
         <persname>Eleanor Dudley Casey</persname>], of the 
         <corpname>William Morris Agency, Inc.</corpname>, concerning
         making the movie of 
         <bibref xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" xlink:href=""><title xlink:type="simple" xlink:href="">Spartina</title></bibref>and offering suggestions for director and/or
         producer, naming 
         <persname>Joel Castleberg</persname>, 
         <persname>Mike Steinberg</persname>, and 
         <persname>Roger Hedden</persname>. There is also an undated
         note from 
         <persname>Eugene J. McCarthy</persname>(1916-).</p>
      <p>Other materials include works submitted to the committee
         for consideration for the 
         <corpname>Henry Hoyns Fellowship</corpname>; interviews with 
         <persname>John Casey</persname>, one by 
         <persname>Nancy Bunge</persname>; and miscellaneous items,
         including [literary] annual reports, a "schematic plan for a
         paw-paw patch," and seating arrangement for a photograph (in
         oversize folder) and guest list for the 
         <corpname>American Academy of Arts and
         Letters</corpname>awards ceremony.</p>
