      <p>This collection consists mainly of the papers of the Family
         of 
         <persname>Stockton Heth</persname>and 
         <persname>Isabella Hammett Heth</persname>. 
         <persname>Stockton Heth, Sr.</persname>was born in 1839; 
         <persname>Isabella Heth</persname>died in 
         <date era="ce" calendar="gregorian">1916</date>. These are the only available dates for the
         two parents. Their children were:</p>
      <p>1. 
         <persname>Stockton Heth, Jr.</persname>, 
         <date era="ce" calendar="gregorian">1892</date>- 
         <date era="ce" calendar="gregorian">1917</date></p>
      <p>2. 
         <persname>Clement Craig Heth</persname>, ?- 
         <date era="ce" calendar="gregorian">21 July 1930</date>(age "about 49" from obituary), m. 
         <persname>Jeannette Cowan Heth</persname></p>
      <p>3. 
         <persname>S. Pickett Heth</persname>, ?- 
         <date era="ce" calendar="gregorian">28 December 1951</date></p>

      <p><persname>Clement Craig Heth</persname>and 
         <persname>Jeannette Cowan Heth</persname>'s son was 
         <persname>Henry Heth</persname>, born in the latter 
         <date era="ce" calendar="gregorian">1920</date>'s .</p>
      <p><persname>Archer Phlegar</persname>was the cousin of 
         <persname>Isabella Norwood Hammet</persname>; 
         <persname>Hunter Phlegar</persname>was his son.</p>
      <p><persname>Sue Wharton</persname>may have been the sister of 
         <persname>Stockton Heth, Sr.</persname>; she was married to 
         <persname>William Wharton, Sr.</persname>, and their son was 
         <persname>William Wharton, Jr.</persname>The relationship
         between 
         <persname>Stockton Heth, Sr.</persname>and 
         <persname>Sue Wharton</persname>is, however, an enigmatic
         one.</p>
      <p>For further genealogical information refer to 
         <persname>S. Pickett Heth</persname>'s application to the 
         <corpname>Daughters of the American Revolution</corpname>,
         held in the Miscellaneous Papers, which traces her selective
         ancestry for four generations ( 
         <date era="ce" calendar="gregorian">January 1904</date>).</p>

      <head>Scope and Content</head>
      <p>This collection consists of the papers of the 
         <famname>Heth Family</famname>of 
         <geogname>Montgomery County, Virginia</geogname>, 1,018 items
         (3 Hollinger boxes, ca. 1 linear foot), 1794-1959, and
         contains financial papers, legal papers, a diary, personal
         correspondence, military papers, school records, photographs,
         and miscellaneous papers.</p>
      <p>The 
         <famname>Heth family</famname>descends from Captain and Major 
         <persname>Henry Heth</persname>of the 
         <corpname>First Virginia Regulars</corpname>of the 
         <corpname>American Revolution</corpname>(see accession number
         38 -114) and from 
         <persname>Captain John Montgomery</persname>, an officer in
         the French and Indian, signer of the 
         <corpname>Holston Declaration of Independence</corpname>, and
         member of Clark's expedition to the 
         <geogname>Northwest Territories</geogname>. 
         <persname>S. Pickett Heth</persname>, niece of Confederate
         General 
         <persname>Henry Heth</persname>and cousin of General 
         <persname>George Pickett</persname>, founded the 
         <corpname>New River Grays Chapter of the Daughters of the
         Confederacy</corpname>. 
         <persname>Stockton Heth, Sr.</persname>, was President of the 
         <corpname>Exchange Bank of Radford</corpname>and owner of 
         <geogname>White Thorn</geogname>, a 1500-acre farm
         approximately three miles west of 
         <geogname>Blacksburg</geogname>, 
         <geogname>Virginia</geogname>, originally purchased by his
         wife, 
         <persname>Isabella Hammet Heth</persname>, from 
         <persname>James F. Preston</persname>in 1891. After the deaths
         of 
         <persname>Stockton Heth, Sr.</persname>, and his sons 
         <persname>Stockton Heth, Jr.</persname>, and 
         <persname>Clement Craig Heth</persname>, parcels of 
         <geogname>White Thorn</geogname>and other 
         <famname>Heth family</famname>holdings in the region were
         leased and sold to the cities of 
         <geogname>Blacksburg</geogname>and 
         <geogname>Radford</geogname>and to 
         <corpname>Virginia Polytechnic Institute</corpname>. The
         family was closely related to the 
         <famname>Phlegar family</famname>of 
         <geogname>Virginia</geogname>. The 
         <famname>Heth family</famname>were prominent bankers,
         businesspeople, farmers and socialites from the turn of the
         century through the end of this collection.</p>
      <p>The Financial Papers include six folders of accounts and
         receipts; two folders of financial papers; and one folder of
         financial papers concerning the estate of 
         <persname>S. Pickett Heth</persname>. The accounts and
         receipts, 1889-1954, include bank statements, hotel register
         accounts, and bills and receipts for farm machinery,
         automotive repair, and grocery and mercantile accounts.</p>
      <p>The Financial Papers contain correspondence concerning
         farm, business and personal transactions, undated budget
         worksheets, numerous bills for services rendered, and various
         correspondence and reports concerning stock and real estate
         holdings and transactions. Notable documents in these folders
         include: letters from the caretaker of the 
         <famname>Heth family</famname>house at 1409 Massachusetts
         Ave., 
         <geogname>Washington, D.C.</geogname>. (4 August 1894 and 15
         August 1894); a mining engineer's report concerning a land
         sale to the 
         <corpname>Norfolk and Western Rail Road</corpname>(4 February
         1899); a letter regarding the price of shipping coal to 
         <geogname>Washington, D.C.</geogname>(3 September 1894); a
         letter regarding the financial status of the 
         <corpname>U.S. Capital Mining Company</corpname>(1 August
         1905); a letter regarding purchase of a site for a school, 
         <geogname>Merrimac, Virginia</geogname>(25 May 1911); a letter
         regarding financial status of the 
         <corpname>Radford-Willis Southern Railway</corpname>(1 October
         1915); a letter regarding purchase of stock in 
         <corpname>General Graphite Company</corpname>, with clipping
         attesting to the stability of the post-war graphite market (29
         December 1917); a letter recommending specific usage and
         disposal of 
         <geogname>White Thorn</geogname>farm property, from 
         <persname>T.B. Hutchenson</persname>, Agronomist, 
         <corpname>Virginia Agricultural Experiment
         Station</corpname>(14 April 1926); a list of field seed prices
         (11 January 1936); an unsigned list of "Partial Expenses" (9
         August 1939); a letter from the 
         <corpname>American Genealogical Society</corpname>(14 March
         1952).</p>
      <p>The Financial Papers concerning the estate of 
         <persname>S. Pickett Heth</persname>include newspaper
         announcements of the auction of her personal possessions (15
         March 1952), the auction records with items and prices, bank
         statements of the estate (1951-1954), life insurance papers
         (1954), and letters (1952-1953) concerning the disposal and
         sale of various real estate holdings.</p>
      <p>The Miscellaneous Papers include: invitations (1889-1944)
         to dances, clubs, parties and weddings; a christmas card of
         1942 from 
         <persname>Jeannette Cowan Heth</persname>, with a lithographed
         wood cut of 
         <geogname>White Thorn</geogname>; newspaper obituaries of 
         <persname>S. Pickett Heth</persname>(d. 28 December 1951), 
         <persname>Clement Craig Heth</persname>(d. 19 July 1930); an
         undated clipping regarding the contract of 
         <persname>S. Pickett Heth</persname>'s land to the city of 
         <geogname>Radford</geogname>; a draft of the charter of the 
         <corpname>New River Grays Chapter of the Daughters of the
         Confederacy</corpname>(19 September 1901); 
         <persname>S. Pickett Heth</persname>'s application to the 
         <corpname>Daughters of the American
         Revolution</corpname>(January 1904); Christmas and calling

      <p>The Legal Papers include: correspondence concerning real
         estate transactions in 
         <geogname>Montgomery County</geogname>(1889-1952); insurance
         policies (1926-1952); indentures between 
         <persname>AbramTrigg</persname>and 
         <persname>Susanna Trigg</persname>and 
         <persname>James Craig</persname>for specified parcels of land
         in 
         <geogname>Montgomery County</geogname>(1794 and 1804); a deed
         between 
         <persname>Robert Crockett</persname>, who inherited said land
         (the " 
         <geogname>Saunders tract</geogname>", on which 
         <geogname>White Thorn</geogname>was built) through his wife,
         and 
         <persname>Edward Hammet</persname>, father of 
         <persname>Isabella Hammet Heth</persname>(1834); an indenture
         between 
         <persname>S.T. Atkin</persname>, trustee of 
         <persname>Moffett Shields</persname>, and 
         <persname>John Knox</persname>, for land in 
         <geogname>Knoxville, Tennessee</geogname>, which 
         <persname>Jeannette Cowan Heth</persname>inherited (1860); an
         agreement to rent the 
         <famname>Heth family</famname>house in 
         <geogname>Washington, D.C.</geogname>, to

      <p>The Legal Papers of the Estate of 
         <persname>S. Pickett Heth</persname>consist of legal
         correspondence, insurance documents, and real estate
         transactions of 
         <persname>Heth</persname>'s holdings in 
         <geogname>Montgomery County</geogname>. This section covers
         1949-1954.</p>
      <p>The Legal Papers regarding 
         <persname>Heth</persname>v. 
         <persname>Heth</persname>concern a suit between 
         <persname>S. Pickett Heth</persname>and 
         <persname>Clement Craig Heth</persname>over the division of
         the Estate of 
         <persname>Stockton Heth, Sr.</persname>. This section consists
         of correspondence and legal documents of 1923-1929.</p>
      <p>The Military Papers of 
         <persname>Clement Craig Heth</persname>consist of 
         <corpname>U.S. Army</corpname>correspondence giving orders for
         his movements, 1919.</p>
      <p>The Miscellaneous Correspondence includes: a letter from 
         <persname>Martha Hammet</persname>to 
         <persname>Edward Hammet</persname>, marked "Olive Branch"
         (n.y., 30 September; probably written before 1850); letters to
         <persname>Henry Heth</persname>; letters from 
         <persname>Jeannette Cowan Heth</persname>(11 January 1940 and
         21 December 1941); a copy of a letter to 
         <persname>Heth Lorton</persname>regarding membership in the 
         <corpname>Society of the Cincinnati</corpname>; a letter to
         "Charlotte" from "Bob" ( 
         <persname>Robert Cowan</persname>?) (21 March 1928); numerous
         other unplaceable letters and fragments thereof.</p>
      <p>The School Records include:

      <p>The Correspondence is arranged according to its recipients.
         The correspondence of 
         <persname>Clement Craig Heth</persname>, 
         <persname>Isabella Hammet Heth</persname>, 
         <persname>Stockton Heth, Sr.</persname>, 
         <persname>Stockton Heth, Jr.</persname>, 
         <persname>Virginia Heth</persname>and 
         <persname>S. Pickett Heth</persname>consists of personal
         letters, the majority from family members and friends. The
         letters discuss social and family matters and include letters
         of condolence on the deaths of 
         <persname>Isabella Hammet Heth</persname>(1916) and 
         <persname>Stockton Heth, Jr.</persname>(1917).</p>
      <p>The letters of 
         <persname>Clement Craig Heth</persname>to 
         <persname>Jeannette Cowan Heth</persname>cover 1917-1920 but
         the majority are undated. Topics discussed include the
         progress of World War I, 
         <persname>Clement Heth</persname>'s troop movements, and
         family and personal matters. The letters were sent from a
         number of camps in the 
         <geogname>United States</geogname>, from 
         <geogname>Italy</geogname>, and possibly from 
         <geogname>France</geogname>or 
         <geogname>Germany</geogname>.</p>
      <p>The Letters of 
         <persname>Clement Craig Heth</persname>include letters
         regarding membership in the 
         <corpname>Society of the Cincinnati</corpname>in the state of 
         <geogname>Virginia</geogname>(2 January and 27 March
         1909).</p>
      <p>The Letters of 
         <persname>Stockton Heth, Sr.</persname>, occupy two folders
         and include two letters from his brother 
         <persname>Henry Heth</persname>, a former Confederate general
