      <head>Scope and Content</head>
      <p>The papers of the
         <famname>Davis</famname>,
         <famname>Horn</famname>,
         <famname>Firebaugh</famname>, and
         <famname>Anderson</famname>families of
         <geogname>Rockbridge County, Virginia</geogname>contain ca.
1,000 items, 1831-1905, and consist of business and legal
papers, correspondence, military records, and miscellaneous
         papers.</p>
<p>The papers pertain to the business, legal, and, to a lesser
extent, personal relationships of these families, whose
         members were related by marriage.
         <persname>William W. Davis</persname>was engaged in the
forging of iron during 1840-1860, and his papers often pertain
         to this business.
<persname>John Horn</persname>was the administrator of the
         estate of
         <persname>Robert B. Anderson</persname>; Anderson was the
         executor of the estate of
<persname>Isaac Bryan</persname>, also involved in the iron
         business.</p>
<p>The business papers consist of statements of accounts,
receipts for payments, and promissory notes. Included among
         the Business Papers of the
         <famname>Davis family</famname>are an appraisement, 1850, of
         the estate of
         <persname>Isaac Bryan</persname>and a statement, 1850, of the
amount of property taken at the appraisement by
         <persname>Elizabeth Bryan</persname>, widow of
<persname>Isaac Bryan</persname>. The Business Papers of the
         <famname>Horn family</famname>include a state license, 1894,
         of
         <persname>Martha Horn</persname>for keeping a boarding house
         near
         <geogname>Rockbridge Baths, Rockbridge County</geogname>, a
deed to the house located near the old bridge at the
         <geogname>Rockbridge Baths</geogname>stating that
         <persname>Martha Horn</persname>,
         <persname>Mary Horn</persname>, and
<persname>Ida Horn</persname>are joint owners of the property,
and appraisement papers, 1858, of the estate of
<persname>Jacob Horn</persname>. Contained in the Papers of
         the
         <famname>Anderson family</famname>are a statement of claims
         against the estate of
         <persname>Isaac Bryan</persname>, 1852, and a deed between
         <persname>Mary Anderson</persname>and
         <persname>William Perry</persname>outlining their claim to
         land on the
         <geogname>North River</geogname>in
         <geogname>Rockbridge</geogname>, known as the
         <geogname>Cedar Grove</geogname>property. An estimate and
         assessment of
         <persname>Benjamin F. Firebaugh</persname>'s agricultural
products for tax purposes, 1863, is included in the Business
         Papers of the
         <famname>Firebaugh family</famname>.</p>
      <p>The Business Papers of the
         <famname>Firebaugh family</famname>include material concerning
         slaves, particularly those leased to
         <persname>B. F. Firebaugh</persname>. Among those specifically
         mentioned are:</p>
      <p><persname>John</persname>. .. leased from
         <persname>Major A. B. Stewart</persname>(1844)
         <lb/><persname>Rachel</persname>. .. leased from
         <persname>Daniel Brown</persname>(1845)
         <lb/><persname>Sarah</persname>. .. leased from
         <persname>John J. McBride</persname>(1846)
         <lb/><persname>Rodah</persname>. .. leased from
         <persname>Jane R. Riordan</persname>(1848)
         <lb/><persname>Lawson</persname>. .. leased from
         <persname>Frances Dorman</persname>(1848)
         <lb/><persname>Lee</persname>. .. leased from
         <persname>John J. McBride</persname>(1851)
         <lb/><persname>Frankie</persname>. .. leased from
         <persname>William W. Davis</persname>(1854)
         <lb/><persname>Milly</persname>. .. leased from
         <persname>William A. McClury</persname>(1857)
         <lb/><persname>Catharine</persname>. .. leased from
         <persname>Henry B. Jones</persname>(1858)
         <lb/><persname>France</persname>. .. leased from
         <persname>William W. Davis</persname>(n.d.)
         <lb/></p>
      <p>There is also a letter, n.d., to
         <persname>Benjamin F. Firebaugh</persname>from
         <persname>Annis Chaplin</persname>informing him of a Negro
woman with a young son that he may be interested in leasing,
         and an agreement, 1850, between
         <persname>William K. Echard</persname>and
         <persname>Robert B. Anderson</persname>, executor for the late
         <persname>Isaac Bryan</persname>, concerning the "surrender"
of an 18 year-old Negro male,
         <persname>Charles Ross</persname>, to a three-year state of
apprenticeship to learn the trade of blacksmithing under the
         supervision of Echard.</p>
<p>The Military Records include annual returns of the strength
         of the
         <corpname>144th Regiment of the Virginia
Militia</corpname>under various commands. Items found among
the Miscellaneous Papers are subscription lists, receipts,
recipes, and fragments. An item of interest is a notice to
         stockholders of the
         <corpname>Howardsville and Rockfish Turnpike
         Company</corpname>, 1850, from the company's president,
<persname>Samuel Christian</persname>. The last wills and
         testaments of
         <persname>Robert B. Anderson</persname>(1853),
         <persname>Jacob Horn</persname>(1860),
         <persname>Martha C. Horn</persname>(1898), and
         <persname>C. J. Sehorn</persname>(1885) are present in the
         collection.</p>
