      <p><persname>Leroy Wesley Cox</persname>was the son of Dr. 
         <persname>William Cox</persname>and 
         <persname>Mary Elizabeth (Lacy) Cox</persname>and had the
         following brothers and sisters: 
         <persname>A.D. Cox</persname>, 
         <persname>Almira Josephine Cox</persname>, 
         <persname>Lucian N. Cox</persname>, 
         <persname>E.M. Cox</persname>and 
         <persname>Panthea Adelaide Cox</persname>. In 1871, 
         <persname>Leroy Wesley Cox</persname>married 
         <persname>Annie Eliza Foster</persname>(daughter of 
         <persname>Nelson Foster</persname>and 
         <persname>Annie Eliza Oaks</persname>) and produced the
         following offspring: 
         <persname>Lucian Franklin Cox</persname>, 
         <persname>Edgar Nelson Cox</persname>, 
         <persname>Mary Eliza Cox</persname>(Mrs. 
         <persname>Thomas Brown</persname>), 
         <persname>Annie Leroy cox</persname>(Mrs. 
         <persname>A.P. Dennis</persname>), 
         <persname>Leroy Wesley Cox</persname>, 
         <persname>Amelia Foster Cox</persname>(Mrs. 
         <persname>J.F. Powell</persname>), and 
         <persname>Almira Josephine Cox</persname>(Mrs. 
         <persname>E.H. McPherson</persname>).</p>

      <head>Scope and Content</head>
      <p>This collection consists of 209 items (2 Hollinger boxes;.5
         linear feet), 1758-1949, chiefly papers and bound volumes of
         the 
         <famname>Cox</famname>and 
         <famname>McPherson</famname>families. The papers include:
         Bible records for the children of 
         <persname>John Humber</persname>and 
         <persname>Elizabeth Humber</persname>, the 
         <famname>Cox family</famname>, and the 
         <famname>Lacy family</famname>; a poem, "The Late Fire in 
         <geogname>Charlottesville, Virginia</geogname>"; a 
         <corpname>Knights of Pythias</corpname>Certificate belonging
         to 
         <persname>Lewis H. Brown</persname>; Precinct Poll books for 
         <geogname>Charlottesville</geogname>, and printed material
         concerning the 
         <corpname>Women's Christian Temperance Union</corpname>.</p>
      <p>Other items in the papers include: a photograph of Miss 
         <persname>Almira Josephine Cox</persname>and her four nieces, 
         <persname>Amelia Foster Christian Cox</persname>, 
         <persname>Annie Leroy Cox</persname>, 
         <persname>Mary Elizabeth Cox</persname>and 
         <persname>Almira Josephine Cox</persname>, who were all
         children of 
         <persname>Leroy Wesley Cox</persname>and 
         <persname>Ann Eliza Foster Cox</persname>; and a photostat of 
         <title xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:type="simple" render="italic" xlink:href="">The Soldiers Almanac.</title></p>
      <p>There are several folders of material pertaining to 
         <persname>Leroy Wesley Cox</persname>(1845-1938), a carriage
         and wagon manufacturer of 
         <geogname>Charlottesville, Virginia</geogname>, and his
         involvement in the 
         <corpname>Republican Party of Charlottesville</corpname>,
         1896-1922. Among these papers are some of the Republican Party
         Papers, which include material about meetings, certificates
         for presidents of the 
         <corpname>Republican Campaign Club</corpname>, voter
         registration lists for 
         <geogname>Charlottesville</geogname>of white women and men, a
         list of "colored" members of the 
         <corpname>McKinley and Hobart Club</corpname>(1896) and both
         "colored" and white voters of 
         <geogname>Charlottesville</geogname>(1896); political
         broadsides, including several about voter qualifications and
         conventions; and newsclippings. The folder of political
         correspondence was created by 
         <persname>Leroy Wesley Cox</persname>while serving as a
         secretary and chairman of the 
         <corpname>Republican City Committee</corpname>of 
         <geogname>Charlottesville</geogname>for over twenty years,
         1901-1922.</p>
      <p>The collection also contains several bound volumes
         including: precinct poll books for 
         <geogname>Charlottesville</geogname>(1915); records of ward
         membership (1896 &amp; n.d.); a general record book for the 
         <corpname>Republican Party of Albemarle
         County</corpname>(1894); an account book for 
         <corpname>L.W. Cox Carriage Manufacturer</corpname>(1884); an
         account book for [the 
         <corpname>Star Theater</corpname>] of 
         <geogname>Charlottesville, Virginia</geogname>, for "motion
         picture shows" (1912-1915); a record of 
         <persname>A.D. Cox</persname>'s estate (1913-1914); and a
         journal (1916-1917).</p>
