 Historical Note

Book Baskets, a local nonprofit organization, was the brain child of Mildred Abraham and was established in 1995 with the goal of encouraging reading through book ownership. For over 20 years Book Baskets has been deeply committed to giving new or lightly used books to those children in the Charlottesville, Va. and Albemarle County area who might not otherwise have books of their own. They currently serve over 30 local social service agencies or education programs. On average, they place over 20,000 books per year into the appreciative hands of children. A small bookplate is placed in the front of each book, allowing the recipient to identify the gift book as his or her own.

 Scope and Contents

Records of the Book Baskets (1995-2018; 1.5 cubic feet) consists of meeting agendas, minutes, reports, news clippings, photographs, thank you letters, information on grants, contributors, and general correspondence. The collection is organized into three series.

Records include minutes of the Book Baskets meetings, treasury reports, book orders, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and photographs. There are some thank you notes, and grant or partnership information in this series although the majority of them are in their own series.
