<p>John Augustine Washington III (1821-1861) son of John Augustine Washington and Jane Charlotte Blackburn Washington, and great-great nephew of George Washington, graduated from the University of Virginia in 1840 and lived at Mount Vernon.</p>  </bioghist>

<p>John Augustine Washington collection of 7 letters were purchased separately and the Small Special Collections Library combined them into one collection, 0.04 cubic feet, 1837-1845. There are letters from Jacob Thompson to John Augustine Washington about the purchase of slaves, a letter from Judith B. Alexander to John Augustine Washington about his health, two letters from John Augustine Washington to his mother, Jane Charlotte Blackburn Washington about Mount Vernon and slaves at "Blakeley" plantation, a letter to John Augustine Washington from his cousin B. W. A. about his current affairs, friends at the University of Virginia and at home, and a letter from R. W. N. Noland to John Augstine Washington about the sale of Farmington in Charlottesville, Virginia.. Names mentioned are Dr. Barnet, Mr. Clauson, Mr. Bell (Mr. Yates son-in-law), Whig candidates Gilmer &amp; Southall, Dr. Cocke, Miss Julia Mandeville, and his Aunt Judy. Also mentioned is the death of Mr. Franklin English by bilious fever.</p>  </scopecontent>
