 Biographical / Historical

Businessman Slaughter W. Ficklin, a partner in Farish, Ficklin & Company which was a stagecoach enterprise in Charlottesville that also delivered mail to Congressman Shelton Leake in Albemarle County.

 Scope and Contents

H. G. Charles, Charles L. Pollock, and Slaughter W. Ficklin letters, 1831, 1847, and [1861], .03 cubic feet consisting of University of Virginia students letters about student life, exams, and the [Alexander Galt] statue of Thomas Jefferson.

H. G. Charles writes to his brother in Darlington Court House, South Carolina six years after the university began classes, and makes reference to a Peter Bacon, presumably another University of Virginia student.

Charles L. Pollock writes to his sister, Nannie, in Leesburg, Va. about exams and the "final celebration," where "...the statue of Jefferson is going to be inaugurated...." The letter was likely written in 1861, the year that the Alexander Galt statue of Thomas Jefferson was presented to the university. Also included is Slaughter Ficklin's letter about business, politics and praise for H. H. Patterson who is fighting in the war in Mexico.
