In 1872 Bryant made a speech in New York on May 22 at the dedication of John Quincey Adams Ward's statue of Shakespeare on the Mall in Central Park. Here, a week after the speech, Bryant acknowledges Mrs. Oakes Smith's praise: "I completed it in the hope that it might not altogether displease such judges as yourself, and having succeeded in that, my ambition is fully gratified."</p></scopecontent><controlaccess><subject authfilenumber="https://lccn.loc.gov/sh85103733" source="lcsh">Poets</subject><corpname role="fmo" rules="rda" source="local">Stuart Bennett Rare Books</corpname><persname authfilenumber="https://lccn.loc.gov/n80008822" rules="rda" source="naf">Smith, Elizabeth Oakes Prince, 1806-1893</persname></controlaccess></c01><c01 id="aspace_062ff0eba19b32a61974a622a5cbda3b" level="series"><did><unittitle>Manuscript: Landscapes from the Works of William Cullen Bryant addition (MSS 6244-ah)</unittitle><unitid>MSS6244</unitid><unitid type="ark"><extref xlink:actuate="onLoad" xlink:href="https://archives.lib.virginia.edu/ark:/59853/241206" xlink:show="new">Archival Resource Key</extref></unitid><unitid type="aspace_uri">/repositories/3/archival_objects/293628</unitid><physdesc altrender="whole"><extent altrender="materialtype spaceoccupied">0.04 Cubic Feet</extent></physdesc><langmaterial><language langcode="eng">English</language></langmaterial><container altrender="Folder (Legal)=0.04 cf" id="aspace_9df000533310c2c6282864c43262b626" label="Mixed Materials" type="folder">2</container></did><accessrestrict id="aspace_c3c63c53d3f8806663d760a985b04e37"><head>Conditions Governing Access</head><p>This collection is open for research.</p></accessrestrict><acqinfo id="aspace_3a494fc57c4eb135142619c4d86978ac"><head>Immediate Source of Acquisition</head><p>This collection was a purchase from Bill Hutchison to the Small Special Collections Library at the University of Virginia Library on 27 January, 2015</p></acqinfo><bioghist id="aspace_5ed3dda1b3f1dea3074e71937b95b5ef"><head>Biographical / Historical</head><p>William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) was a prominent figure in the development of American literature and worked for over 50 years as the editor of the New York Evening Post.
