 Biographical / Historical

Pinala Forestine West Monroe was born on 23 December 1918 in Richmond, Virginia to Oscar West and Mildred Mallory West. She attended the St. Philip School of Nursing, graduating in 1939. The St. Philip School of Nursing was a segregated program for Black nursing students that began in 1920 with the opening of St. Philip Hospital. At that time, Virginia law required racially segregated facilities. The Medical College of Virginia (MCV) operated the school until 1962 when it closed due to declining enrollment and the integration of the MCV School of Nursing. Monroe actively supported the St. Philip Alumnae Association, including co-authoring A Historical Bulletin of the Saint Philip School of Nursing and Alumnae. She worked as a nurse at the McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center. West died in 2003.

 Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials related to St. Philip Alumnae Association, a 1939 St. Philip graduation program, the Constituion and By-Laws of the Old Dominion Graduate Nurses Assocation, and publications related to MCV Hospital and the Department of Nursing, MCV-VCU.

 Separated Materials

The 1939 edition of The Light, the yearbook for the St. Philip School of Nursing was donated with the collection. It is part of the St. Philip yearbook collection. The digitized copy is available through VCU Libraries Digital Collections, VCU Yearbooks.

Monroe also donated her St. Philip uniform cape. It is part of the medical artifact collection (acc. 1986.11).
