</head>
<p>St. Albans Sanatorium began as the St. Albans Lutheran Boys School in 1892. In 1916 Dr. J.C. King converted the boys school into St. Albans Sanitorium. Treatments given to patients with mental illnesses at St. Albans included Insulin Coma Therapy, Electroconvulsive Therapy and Hydro Shock Therapy. St.Albans closed in 1994. </p>
<p> Radford Community Hospital was built in 1943 as a part of a Public Works project. The hospital became a part of the Carillion Clinic in 1987 and in 1999 the hospital was moved from Radford to Montgomery County making it the New River Valley Medical Center. </p>
<p> Roanoke Memorial Hospital was founded in 1899 as Roanoke Hospital. In the 1920's and 30's, it's growth was funded by railroad executive and contractor David W. Flickwir. The present Flickwir Memorial Unit is still stands. In the 21st century, the hospital completed an expansion project to include an emergency deparment, labor and delivery unit and a pediatric emergency room.

<head>Scope and Content
</head>
<p>This collection contains materials on St. Albans Psychiatric Hospital, Radford Community Hospital, Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and other regional hospitals. Included are brochures, annual reports, newsletters, and other information from St. Albans dating from the 1970s, materials from the Radford Community Hospital, a 1978 Annual Report from Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and articles about other hospitals dating from the 1930s and 1950s. Also included are articles about St. Albans' care for coal miners. Materials related to other hospitals include a booklet on the history of the Crippled Children's Hosptial and newspaper clippings on various Virginia hospitals included, but not limited to Giles and Jackson.
