    <head>Scope and Contents</head>
<p>This collection consists of photocopies of letters, papers, and printed material by or about John Archibald Campbell, including nine letters to his son, Duncan G. Campbell (1853-1865), material relating to John A. Campbell's interviews with Abraham Lincoln in Richmond, April, 1865, and to his imprisonment in Fort Pulaski; printed speeches and interviews; five letters (photocopies) from Campbell to Secretary of State William H. Seward relating to Campbell's efforts to mediate the problem of Fort Sumter.Also included are the papers of Duncan G. Campbell. Other correspondents include George Washington Parke Custis and Horace Greeley.</p>  </scopecontent>

    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>John Archibald Campbell was born on June 24, 1811 in Georgia. He served as Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1853-1861 and as Assistant Secretary of War for the Confederacy from 1862-1865. He died in Maryland on March 12, 1889.</p>  </bioghist>
