<p>This collection consists of one letter (circa 1871) written by VMI Cadet Andrew L. Johnston to his mother. The bulk of the letter concerns family matters.</p>  </scopecontent>

    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>Andrew Langstaff Johnston was from from Richmond, Virginia. He graduated VMI in 1872 and went on to become a civil and electrical engineer. He built the first operational electric street railway in Richmond. Johnston died on May 17, 1901. </p><p>Johnston was the nephew of George K. Macon, VMI Class of 1866.</p>  </bioghist>
