<p>This collection consists of one excuse (dated January 23, 1856) in verse form written by Cadet Craig W. McDonald after being late for reveille. The document is addressed to the Commandant's office.</p>  </scopecontent>

    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>Craig Woodrow McDonald was born in 1837 in Romney, West Virginia. He graduated VMI in 1859 and went on to become a teacher and law student. During the Civil War he was a staff officer with the Confederate States of America. McDonald was killed in the battle at Gaines Mill, Virginia in 1862.</p>  </bioghist>
