    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>John Stephens Illig was born in 1825 in Germany. He was a musician and immigrated to the United States in 1853. He served in United States Army bands until the outbreak of Civil War when he became a member of the Confederate States of America, 1st Virginia Regiment band. Illig was a member of the VMI band from 1869 to 1899. He died in 1903 in Lexington, Virginia.</p>  </bioghist>

<p>This collection consists of one scrapbook fragment compiled by musician John S. Illig (approximately 20 items). The scrapbook documents Illig's life, including a passport and other items dating from his years in Germany, a certificate of citzenship, United States Army discharge papers, and other biographical material.</p>  </scopecontent>
