Sep. 2, 1857

My dear Sir,
I take great pleasure for giving my testimonial in behalf of your brother, Mr. Arch. M. Fauntleroy, for a Commission in the U.S. Army. There are few young men who have ever graduated in this school, who are better suited for such a life. A distinguished graduate of the last year's class, one of the best officers of his class, he will make a fine officer of the Army; I do, with great pleasure, recommend him to the Pres. Of the U.S. for opportunity; believing that his career will reflect credit upon the Institution of which he is a graduate.
[I remain very Respectfully]
Francis H. Smith
