First used to describe the extravagant style of decorative art and architecture that originated in Italy, the term Baroque has come to describe more broadly the artistic movement that spread across Europe during the 17th & 18th century, following the Renaissance Era and preceding Classicism. In France, the term has been expanded to include music composed from circa 1600-1770 and representing a complex and diverse body of works, reflecting the considerable evolution of French music during this period. Additionally, in contrast to the rest of Europe, French music during the Baroque era preserved or incorporated elements of traditional folk music into its compositions, reflecting its idealized status under Kings Louis XIV, XV, and XVI.
Handwritten music manuscript containing 19 songs, written over 40 pages, collected and arranged by E. B. in Bourges, France in 1746. The entire manuscript is written in French, including an inscription on the first page that reads in English: "Containing all sorts of new and old songs, rural and bacchanalian, collected and arranged by E. B. in the year 1746 in Bourges" and a list of the 19 song titles on the next page. The remaining pages consist of handwritten musical scores, verse, and lyrics. Center inscriptions on the front and back covers are identifiable, but partially illegible due to the marbled paper wrapping.
The Special Collection Research center also holds the Nellie M. Lee music manuscript book and "Three solos for the violoncello with accompaniment for a bass" by Johan Arnold Dahmen music manuscript.
