Charles Scott and Company ran a salt works outside of Saltville, Virginia, and supplied salt for the state of Virginia during the American Civil War. One of the receipts is for a retainer for James W. Sheffey <title render="doublequote">in case of impressment of C. Scott and Co.'s property by the state.</title></abstract>

    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Charles Scott was a merchant based in Glade Spring Depot, Virginia. Charles Scott and Company traded in basic goods and ran a salt mill outside of Saltville, Virginia. Saltville was known as the Salt Capital of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, and Charles Scott and Company sold salt to the Virginia Government along with Stuart, Buchanan, and Company in 1863. In March 1864, the salt works of Charles Scott and Company and Stuart, Buchanan and Company were impressed by the state for salt production for the people of Virginia.</p>  </bioghist>

    <head>Scope and Content</head>
<p>The collection includes bills and receipts relating to the business of Charles Scott and Company dating from 1863 to 1865 during the American Civil War. Receipts are for goods sold by Charles Scott and Company and some of Charles Scott's business partners. Goods include corn, meal, and <title render="doublequote">brogans</title> as well as shipping costs for other goods. One receipt is for retainer fee for James W. Sheffey <title render="doublequote">in case of impressment of C. Scott and Co.'s property by the state.</title></p>  </scopecontent>
