    <head>Source of Acquisition</head>
<p>The Emory M. Cox Receipts were purchased by Special Collections in 2008. Sold in a lot named the "Scott County Collection," the receipts were accompanied by an 1854 letter from William Vinson and a land sale contract between Samuel Wallace and John Allan. In the course of processing, the items were divided into three separate manuscript collections.</p>  </acqinfo>

<p>The processing, arrangement, and description of the Emory M. Cox Receipts commenced and was completed in July 2008.</p>  </processinfo>

    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Emory M. Cox, a Scott County, Virginia farmer, surveyor, county supervisor and district school trustee, was born at Scott, Virginia on February 5, 1835. The son of James Cocke and Polly Carter, Cox married Nancy A. Elizabeth Mann in March 1861. The couple had nine children, including James W., John W., Wright B., Polly, Nellie, Oscar P., Onia B., Viola, and Emory D. Cox. Cox enlisted in Company C, 25th Virginia Cavalry, on August 16, 1862. Post-war rosters list him as absent without leave two years later. He died on September 21, 1908.</p>  </bioghist>

<p>This collection contains three receipts of Emory M. Cox, a resident of Scott County, Virginia. Included are a receipt from M. W. Smyth for bacon sold, an 1869 county tax receipt, and a 1908 license fee receipt.</p>  </scopecontent>
