Biographical / Historical

Henry Hungerford, son of James and Elizabeth Landrum Hungerford, was born at Montross (Westmoreland County), Virginia, on November 15, 1788. The younger Hungerford served as a major in the War of 1812. He married Amelia Spence (1794-1831), and the couple had six children. Following Amelia's death, Hungerford married Mary Ann Spence (1811-1850) in 1834; together they had six children. The 1850 federal census lists Hungerford as a 62-year-old grocer, living in Washington, D. C. with five of his children; the 1860 federal census for Washington describes his occupation as "clerk." Henry Hungerford died at Montross on April 29, 1866, and was buried in Hungerford Cemetery, Leedstown (Westmoreland County).
 </bioghist>
