This collection contains interviews of faculty in the College of Education by students in the COE. The interviewees include Dr. Fred J. Brieve, Dr. Karl T. Hereford, Duncan Lyle Kinnear, Richard L. Lynch, Dr. Carl McDaniels, and Dr. Wayne M. Worner. Below is some brief biographical information about the interviewees.
Frederick "Fred" J. Brieve (1928-1995) was born and raised in Holland, Michigan. He served as a United States Naval Officer from 1952-1955 and continued working for the government. He also served as a public school administrator for many years. He was the head of the Division of Administrative and Educational Services and the Assistant Dean in the College of Education at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, where he also served as a professor of Educational Leadership from 1971-1979. He went on to teach at a number of other universities, including Western Michigan University and John Tyler Community College.
Karl T. Hereford (1926-1999) served as the Dean of Education and he was the founding Dean of the College of Education in 1971 at Virginia Tech. Prior to working at Virgnia Tech, Hereford served as a Professor of Education at Michigan State Univeristy, Director of Long Range Planning, CF Kettering Institute, Dayton, Ohio, and as the Director of Program Planning for the Bureau of Elementary and Secondary Education in Washington D.C.
Duncan Lyle Kinnear (1904-2001) was a professor emeritus in the Department of Biology at Virginia Tech. He also published
Richard L. Lynch (1943-2023) was born in Iowa and later attended the University of Northern Iowa where he received his bachelors degree. He later received his masters degree from the University of Minnesota and his PhD from Indiana University. After graduating, he moved to Blacksburg, Virginia, where he spent the next twenty years of his life as a professor in the department of education at Virginia Tech. He later left Virginia Tech for the University of Georgia, where he was the Director of the School of Leadership and Lifelon Learning.
Cark McDaniels (1930-2019) was born in Sioux City, Iowa. He received his bachelors degree from Bridgewater College before he joined the U.S. Navy. After leacing te Navy, he attended the University of Virginia for both his masters and his PhD. McDaniels briefly worked at George Washington University as a professor of education. He also worked as a guidance counselor at his former high school, Washington-Liberty High School in Montrose, Virginia, before he moved to Blacksburg in 1969 to help found Virginia Tech's College of Education. He later created the Virginia Career Vital Information for Education and Work, or the Virginia VIEW. He retired from VT in 1996 and wrote two books about career counseling.
Wayne Dempsey' M. Worner (1937-2025) was born in Wahpeton, North Dakota, where he worked for many years as a teacher and a principal. He later received his PhD from North Dakota State University in 1966. After earning a doctorate, Worner moved to Blacksburg, Virginia, where he helped to create the College of Education at Virginia Tech. He was the first division chair of curriculum and instruction in the College of Education.
Courses in education have been offered in specific programs throughout the history of the university, and the Board of Visitors approved a Master of Education degree in 1951. A Department of Education was founded in the College of Arts and Sciences starting 1965, and the College of Education was established on July 1, 1971. In 1996, the College of Education merged with the College of Human Resources to form the College of Human Resources and Education, renamed College of Human Sciences and Education in 2002. When the College dissolved in 2003, the education program moved to the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and now operates as the School of Education.

The College of Education History Records primarily consist of oral history interviews regarding the history of the College of Education at Virginia Tech. Interviews were conducted in November and December of 1989 by the students of Patrick Carlton, Associate Professor of Education at VT. Interviewees were faculty members of the College of Education, including Karl T. Hereford, who was the first dean of the College of Education, and Fred J. Brieve, Duncan Lyle Kinnear, Richard L. Lynch, Carl McDaniels, and Wayne H. Worner. Materials consist of cassette tapes and transcripts of interviews, interview notes, and. correspondence (1970-1972). The collection also includes the report "Developmental Goals and Priorities of the College of Education 1972-1976" and reports by some of the student interviewers about their interviews.
This collection's finding aid is arranged by interviewee, so all materials regarding specific interviewees are grouped together. The boxes themselves are arranged by materials. Box one contains transcripts of the interviews and some physical materials like floppy discs. Box two contains the original cassette tapes and box three contains duplicates of those cassette tapes.
