    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>While the owner of the ledger is not idenfified, papers found within the ledger suggest that it may have belonged to a member of the Grenell family. One paper inserted in the ledger contains numerous instances of the name "Ben Grenell." Accrding to an article in the May 2012 issue of the <title render="italic">Town of Greenfield Historical Society Newsletter</title>, Benjamin Grenell was born in Salisbury, Connecticut and settled in Greenfield, New York, where he established a general store. He married Phebe Dennison; the couple would have four children.  According to the findagrave.com page for Benjamin Grenell, he was born 30 March 1764; died in Greenfield on 20 November 1825; and was buried in Grenell Cemetery, Middle Grove (Saratoga County), New York.</p>  </bioghist>
