Biographical Note

Lewis Augustus Hall, son of Lewis Earl and Mary Lou Whitehurst Hall, was born in Norfolk, Virginia on May 29, 1903. Immediately after graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1924, Hall was hired by Chesapeake & Potomac (C&P) Telephone Company. Initially working in Baltimore, Maryland, he was moved to the company's operations in West Virginia in 1928. By 1930, he was living in Clarksburg and working for the company as an electrical engineer. By 1940, he had married and was living with wife Virginia Hall and the couple's two sons in Wheeling, West Virginia, where Lewis Hall was working as a district plant manager for C&P. Two years later, Hall was working for C&P in Charleston, West Virginia. He would remain in Charleston for the remainder of his career and retired as an assistant vice-president for C&P in 1968.

Hall maintained an active interest in his alma mater, serving as president of the Charleston, West Virginia chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association and for 15 years on the board of directors of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association. In 1977, the university recognized Hall's contributions by awarding him the Alumni Distinguished Service Award.

By 1982, Lewis Hall had moved to Lynchburg, Virginia. He died in Lynchburg on September 4 of that year.
 </bioghist>

Scope and Content

This collection contains papers of Lewis A. Hall, a 1924 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and consists largely of university-related material from Hall's years as a student and honors awarded him as an alumnus. The collection contains several small textiles, including pennants, cadet chevrons, and Class of 1924 armbands. Also within the collection are programs, invitations, and other memorabilia from various athletic events and dances. (Included among these are a schedule and program for the Virginia Tech Minstrels.) Also contained in the collection are approximately 100 photographs, including Hall's studio portrait and group photos of the Cotillion Club of 1922/1923 and the 1924 freshman basketball team. Snapshots include views of "rat parades," football games, a snowball fight, and various campus views and unidentified students, as well as scenes from Reserve Officers' Training Corps camp at Fort Monroe, Virginia. A set of Hall's drawings for assignments in an engineering problems course completes the collection.
 </scopecontent>
