<p>The Stephen Spender Papers were purchased by the Virginia Tech Library in 1972 and transferred to Special Collections in February 1974.</p>  </acqinfo>

    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Sir Stephen Harold Spender (February 28, 1909 - July 16, 1995) was an english poet and novelist who worked with the themes of social injustice and class struggle. He was a Professor of English Literature at University College in Oxford, and author of over fifty works.</p><p>Ian Hamilton (March 24, 1938- December 27, 2001) was a British literary critic, reviewer, poet and magazine editor/publisher. It was at his job at the <title render="italic">Times Literary Supplement</title>, holding the position from 1965-1973.</p>  </bioghist>
