<p>This collection was acquired by Newman Library prior to 1973. In 1973, the letter was transferred to Special Collections, when discovered in a copy of <title render="italic">The Autobiography of William Allen White</title>. A 1946 copy of the book is in the University Libraries' catalog with call number PN4874 W52 A3.</p>  </acqinfo>

    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>William Allen White (1868-1944) was a newspaper editor for <title render="italic">Emporia Gazette</title> of Kansas, politician, author, and leader of the Progressive movement. </p><p>Mary Ethel McAuley was a journalist who wrote for the <title render="italic">Pittsburgh Dispatch</title> and an artist. She was known for her work on Germany during World War I, including the book <title render="italic">Germany in War Time</title> (1917). The column "The Wanderer" for the Dispatch asked general questions and published responses from the famous and general public.
