<p>During its session begun in May 1776, the General Assembly passed an act for erecting salt works. Each salt work had a manager responsible for constructing the works and who filed periodice reports to the governor. During its session begun in 1777, the General Assembly passed an act appointing Henry Pitt and Samuel Hunt managers of salt works in Isle of Wight and Nansemond counties.

<p>These records are part of Auditor of Public Accounts. Administration of State Government: State-Owned Property - Industries. This series consists of records concerning the Isle of Wight salt works managed by Henry Pitt. The accounts contain the names of persons to whom payments were made, the amounts and the dates paid. The vouchers include the names of persons to whom money was owed, the amounts, and the dates the vouchers were submitted. (APA entry no. 664 corresponds to old auditor item 284.)
