Biographical Information

The General Assembly passed an act on 4 April 1848 appropriating funds to pay the officers and soldiers of the Virginia Regiment of Volunteers to Mexico. On 14 March 1850, a resolution was adopted by the legislature appointing Richard M. Heath the state's agent to recover from the federal government all the money paid by the state before the regiment was mustered into United States service. The payrolls contain names of soldiers, dates of service, and rates of pay. The vouchers include the names of persons to whom money was owed, the amounts, and the dates the vouchers were submitted.
