</head>
<p>Mecklenburg County was named for Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Stralitz, consort of King George III. The county was formed from Lunenburg County in 1764. The county court first met on 11 March 1765.   
</p>
<p>Numerous loose records prior to 1783 are missing. Volumes that record deeds, court orders, and wills exist.
