<p>The act which established the previous Land Office passed the General Assembly on 22 June 1779. The register was the head of the Office and was appointed by joint ballot of both houses of the legislature.

<head>Scope and Content
</head>
<p>These records contain publications from various states, mainly rules and regulations for the enforcement of weights and measures laws of individual states and instructions for weights and measures officials in the discharge of their duties. Included also are two annual reports of the Department of Public Safety in Richmond, Virginia. Publications are available for the cities of Chicago, Detroit, and Indianapolis, as well as the Federal Bureau of Standards, Washington, D.C.
