</head>
      <p>Powhatan County was named for the paramount chief of the Powhatan Indians in the tidewater of Virginia in the late sixteenth and early years of the seventeenth century. It was formed from Cumberland County in 1777, and part of Chesterfield County was added in 1850. The county seat is Powhatan.

      <p>Powhatan County (Va.) United States Military Headquarters Subdistrict Appomattox Correspondence, 1865, consist of letters between United States Military Headquarters Subdistrict Appomattox located in Petersburg and local commanding officers in Powhatan County. Topics found in correspondence include distributing rations to destitute white and African Americans, the  provision of housing for emancipated slaves, and a request from planters to extend apprenticeships of African American children beyond one year.
