These items came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Buchanan County.
Buchanan County was named for the United States president James Buchanan and was formed from Tazewell and Russell Counties in 1858.
Records were destroyed by fire in 1885; records created after that date suffered extreme damage in a flood in 1977.
Buchanan County (Va.) Land Records, 1853-1902 (bulk 1853-1865), consist of an Entry Book for 1853-1865. It also includes Indices for Deed Book C, 1887-1889; Deed Book F, 1888-1889; Deed Book G, 1889-1890; Deed Book H, 1889-1891; Deed Book I, 1900-1902; Deed Book K, 1889-1893; Deed Book L, 1892-1894; and Deed Book N, 1894-1896.
The Entry Book contains information that is part of the process of obtaining a land grant from the Virginia State Land Office. The first step, in receiving a land grant from the state, was to obtain a warrant from the Virginia State Land Office. Once the person got the warrant, they would file an entry with the county clerk for specific acreage to be set aside for surveying. The third step was to have a survey made. The fourth step was to send the warrant and survey to the Virginia State Land Office, which would result in receiving a Land Grant for the land.
