Scope and Content

Lunenburg County (Va.) Court Records, 1825-1886, consist of records arranged into the following series: court records, free negro and slave records, and military and pension records.

Court records consist of communications with the Freedmen's Bureau and Military District of Virginia officials about county and court business, 1867 and 1869. Subjects include setting up a military court in Lunenburg in lieu of the county court, payment for government horse shoeing, and a situation in which two African Americans had been murdered.

Free negro and slave records consist of the sale of runaway slave Jack (1825) and the registration of free negro Drury Cooper after the destruction or loss of his original papers (1855).

Military and pension records include reports about monies received to furnish and clothe volunteer county military companies (1861-1684) which mainly are accounts of items purchased and their cost, but also contains a lengthy 1862 report from the captain of the Pryor Rifle Company that gives a report of their military activities and details loss or damage to supplies. Also included are Reports of indigent families of soldiers from 1864 who would be supported by the county, and the Confederate pension application of Marion J. Moore from 1886 including affidavits supporting his service claims.
