Historical Information

Nelson County was formed in 1807 from Amherst County. The county was named for Thomas Nelson, Jr., governor of Virginia from June to November 1781.

Some of the volumes found in this collection were originally created by the County Court.

Scope and Content

Bonds are obligations or covenants between persons, made binding by a money guarantee. Bonds are given for various causes, and show the names of the principal and sureties, the date, amount and condition of the obligation, and signatures. Some of the bond books in this collection are comprised of officials' bonds--given by those elected to a county office.
