      <head>Historical Information
</head>
      <p>Stafford County was named for the English county. It was formed from Westmoreland County in 1664. Part of King George County was added in 1777. The county seat is Stafford.
</p>
      <p>Many pre-Civil War court records were lost to vandalism by Union troops during the Civil War. A few volumes that record deeds, court orders, and wills exist.</p>
      <p>The original records were created by the County Court.

      <head>Scope and Content
</head>
      <p>Stafford County (Va.) Deed Book, 1722-1728, records the name of the grantor and grantee, the residence of both individuals and the description of property being sold or transferred.  The volume also includes wills--the name of the testator, list of heirs and the year the wills were proven in court and probate recors such as inventories and appraisements, settlements of estates and adminstrator/executor and guardian accounts.
