Lunenburg County (Va.) Minute Book of Taxes, 1858, is a rough draft of personal property taxes compiled by the Commissioner of the Revenue. At the front of the volume is a list of district names and numbers. Categories taxed include whites and slaves over the age of 16, whites over the age of 12, free negroes between the ages of 21 and 55, slaves over the age of 12, horses, cattle, pleasure carriages, watches, clocks, pianos, gold plate, household furniture, officials fees, and various types of money and investments made as a merchant or businessman. The names are arranged alphabetically. There is no index.

Following the tax list is a register of voters in their respective districts together with an enrollment of the militia according to law for 1858. Information given includes names in alphabetical order, voter district, and initials of militia captain if enrolled.

After the voter register is a register of births in the county of Lunenburg for the year ending 31 December 1857. Information given includes date, name of child, sex (male/female), color (white/slave), alive or stillborn, mother's name, number at birth, and father's name (in case of slave, name may be owner's name). Names are recorded in no order.

A register of deaths for 1857 follows the register of births. Information recorded includes dates, name, sex (male/female), age, condition (probably refers to marital status), color (white/slave/free person), occupation, parents names, and cause of death. Names are recorded in no order.

The final four pages of the book are a list of free negroes and mulattoes in the county of Lunenburg for the year 1858. Information recorded includes name, male or female, residence, and occupation. Names are recorded in no order.

Notes in the first two pages at the front of the volume list land transactions for various estates and between various persons. The only dated entry lists the date of transaction as 1857.
