These items came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Caroline County.

Historical Information

Caroline County was formed in 1728 from Essex, King and Queen and King William Counties. Additional parts of King and Queen County was added in 1742 and 1762.

Most loose records and deed books prior to 1836 and will books prior to 1853 were stolen, mutilated, and/or destroyed by Union troops who ransacked the courthouse in May 1864. A near-complete run of order books exists.

Scope and Content

Deed Books, 1742-1859 of Caroline County Court. The deed book records the name of the grantor and grantee, the residence of both individuals and the description of property being sold or transferred. All of the volumes have indexes which contains the first and last names of both parties. It is arranged alphabetically from A-Z. Volume 1742, 1762; 1777-1840 has a plat.

Will Books, 1742-1859, of Caroline County Court. The will book includes the name of testator, list of heirs and year the wills were proven in court and probate records such as inventories and appraisements. Volume 1742, 1762; 1777-1840 has a plat. All the will books have indexes.
