The Robert Alonzo Brock Collection was filmed by The Huntington Library in cooperation with The Library of Virginia with funding provided by The Library of Virginia Foundation with the support of The Roller-Bottimore Foundation and The Robins Foundation. Microfilm received 15 April 2004.

Historical Information

James City County was named for James I. It was one of the eight shires established in 1634. Parts of New Kent and York Counties were added later.

During the Civil War, the records of James City County and Williamsburg were transferred to Richmond for safekeeping but were destroyed by fire in Richmond on 3 April 1865.

Scope and Content

James City County (Va.) Land Grant and Deeds, 1638-1713. The collection contains one land grant and three deeds, as follows: a land patent to Richard Kempe, 1638 Mar. 4; a deed between Thomas Drinkard and Elizabeth the wife of Samuel Chappel of the one part and Francis Lightfoot of the other part, 1712 Apr. 10; a deed between Thomas Drinkard, shoemaker, of the one part, and Francis Lightfoot, 1712 Apr. 19; and a deed from Elizabeth Chermaison and Claude Rouneire, Executor of Joseph Chermaison, and Edward Jacquelin, 1712 Jan. 12.
