The Robert Alonzo Brock Collection was filmed by The Huntington Library in cooperation with The Library of Virginia with funding provided by The Library of Virginia Foundation with the support of The Roller-Bottimore Foundation and The Robins Foundation. Microfilm received 15 April 2004.

Historical Information

Smyth County was named in 1832 for Alexander Smyth, a former congressman from Virginia who had died in 1830 while efforts were underway to create the new county. The county was formed from Washington and Wythe Counties.

Scope and Content

Smyth County (Va.) Land Grant and Lease of the Preston Saltworks Estate, 1858 and 1862. Consists of a land grant to George W. Buchanan, 1862 Aug. 1; and a copy of an agreement between Thomas Preston and Thomas Spencer and others leasing the Preston Saltworks Estate, containing four thousand acres, for fifty thousand dollars a year. The lease includes a description of the saltworks.
