Historical Information

Hanover County was formed from New Kent County in 1720.

Most county court records, particularly deeds, wills, and marriage records, were destroyed by fire in Richmond on 3 April 1865, where they had been moved for safekeeping during the Civil War. The circuit court records were not moved to Richmond and were relatively unscathed. Consequently, there is a strong run of common law papers and chancery papers after 1831 that were generated by the circuit superior court of law and chancery and its successor, the circuit court.

Scope and Content

Hanover County (Va.) plats and surveys, 1769-1875, n.d., found in this collection include a plat and survey (1769) of 181 acres done on behalf of Captain William Clark; a plat and survey (1814) of 131 1/2 acres done on behalf of Benjamin Hooper; a plat and survey (n.d.) of 42 acres done on behalf of Samuel Perrin; a plat of 252 acres known as Wheaten's tract; a plat (1875) of land owned by Thomas H. Fox in Ashland, Virginia, on both sides of the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad divided into lots; map (n.d.) of the eastern half of Hanover County showing the location of communities, railroad lines, and creeks.
