Roanoke County (Va.) Register of Marriage Licenses issued to Freed People of Color, 1866-1881, contains information about the date of marriage, names of male and female parties getting married, age and condition (single or widowed) of each person before this marriage, place of marriage (town or county), places of birth and residence for both parties, names of parents for both bride and groom, and the occupation of the male. There is no index. This volume contains 14 pages of undated notes at the beginning of the book related to road and bridge engineering.

Roanoke County (Va.) Register of Marriage Licenses or Marriage Register Colored, 1881-1919, is a continuation of the previous volume. It is labelled Volume 1B. It records the same information as the previous volume. A loose and incomplete marriage license for Jess Slade to Letha Foust dated 1916 March is inserted in the front of the volume. There is no index.

The African American marriages from these two volumes are also re-recorded together with white marriages in Marriage Register 1, 1853-1919 (barcode 1099698) and Marriage Register 2, 1919-1934 (barcode 1099708). These marriage registers have individual indexes within each volume and are also indexed by the master index to marriages found on microfilm on Roanoke County (Va. ) Reels 350-352.
