Historical Information

The genealogical charts were used as evidence in the
chancery case Charles Evans and others versus Lewis B. Allen
heard in the Superior Court of Chancery for the Lynchburg
District. The plaintiffs in the case were slaves who were
seeking to gain their freedom from Allen on the basis that
their ancestor, Jane Gibson, was a free person. The case was
dismissed in 1821 because the plaintiffs failed to appear in
court.
