Biographical/Historical Information

Samuel Pursel is listed in the 1850 industrial census of
Loudoun County, Virginia, as the operator of a woolen factory
employing ten workers and producing 20,000 yards of kersey,
carpeting, and woolen cloth per year. The 1806 industrial
census shows Pursel in partnerhsip with John C. Gaver in the
operation of a wool and cotton factory with five employees
producing 7,000 yards per year.

The three ledgers in this accession record charges for
wool, carding, fulling, and carpet weaving. Includes a
memorandum of capital invested by Pursel, as well as accounts
for the firm Pursel and Gaver. It appears that Pursel was also
in partnership with Caleb Russell prior to 1857. Entries are
for individuals from Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William
Counties, and a firm in Baltimore.
